Division of Correctional Medicine
The Division of Correctional Medicine is comprised of UIC faculty, physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and social workers offering multispecialty care to individuals in custody within the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). Services provided to IDOC include chronic care management, medication management, linkage to care, and re-entry assistance. Clinically, the Division and its providers have expanded access to care and have improved quality outcomes via telemedicine to IDOC patients in the areas of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C (HCV), diabetes, and gender affirming care. The Division is working closely with its IDOC partners to identify future partnerships to leverage telehealth and in-person visits at the Joliet Inpatient Treatment Center (JITC), a state-of-the-art IDOC facility located 45 miles from UI Health Hospital.
Through its clinical operation, the Division has served as an essential training and educational resource for students within the College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy interested in chronic care management and social justice issues. Additionally, faculty are exploring ways to develop scholarly research centered on this vulnerable population to improve health outcomes both within IDOC facilities and throughout communities, post-release.
